Position Summary:

The Avionics Electrical UM Level 2 will actively participate in Specification, Design, Integration and Certification of architecture and system functions on a variety of programs, and on multiple platforms (mainly H125, H130, H135, H145 and H160). In the context of Airworthiness, the UM will serve as an FAA Systems & Equipment (Electrical) Designated Engineering Representative (DER) and AHI ODA UM.

Primary Responsibilities:

Certification activities: 60%

  • Develop the Certification Package (Cert Plan, CCL, and CIP) for assigned projects.
  • When appropriate, coordinate with other UMs for data review and evaluation as necessary.
  • Review data and find compliance with the Electrical and Avionics regulatory requirements of Title 14 Parts 27 and 29.
  • Maintain FAA delegation(s) required to make these findings on behalf of AHI.
  • Provide certification expertise to the design organization and other areas within AHI on FAA compliance requirements.
  • Provide training to engineering personnel and mentor potential ODA unit members.

Avionics Electrical system architecture and definition: 30%

  • Define architecture and function solutions in accordance with engineering operation requirements as elaborated during offer phases to meet customer, airworthiness, general engineering standards and company requirements.
  • Design, integrate and approve the defined solutions
  • Validate design solutions by implementing simulation, modeling, predictive tools
  • Define and approve verification methods (analysis, tests...), elaborate verification program including general engineering aspects such as Function Hazardous Analysis, EMI:EMC, general environment, vibrations, thermal analysis (list not limited) and deliver the verification results to Airworthiness team
  • Coordinate with test center to define the test intention and expected test results
  • Optimize design solution to improve the reuse of existing solutions

Electrical integration activities: 10%

  • Design, develop, and review technical documents and engineering drawings needed to integrate avionics and electrical equipment, and their associated interfaces

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:

Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent experience.

Preferred:

  • Masters of Science (MSEE) or equivalent experience.

Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years in avionics system architecture/design and at least five (5) years working experience with the FAA on Certification projects as a DER and/or UM.
  • Experienced with following systems: Glass cockpit, Radio navigation, Radio Communication, and Moving map.
  • Must be an FAA Systems & Equipment Electrical DER in good standing with the delegations noted below (Delegations from FAA Order 8110.37, Chart C2, 14 CFR Part 27 and 29. Ref Chart 1 on pp. 3.)

Licensure/Certifications:

Required:

  • Training and/or experience with ARP 4754, ARP 4761, DO-160, DO-297, DO-254 & DO-178, Title 14Part 21 Certification Procedures for Products and Articles.

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

Required:

  • Avionics architecture and system integration.
  • System Engineering and solid understanding of ARP 4754, ARP 4761, DO-160, DO-297, DO-254 & DO-178.
  • Airworthiness (experience with compliance allocation and demonstration).

Simulation.

  • Flight safety (safety objectives definition).
  • Formal training and/or working knowledge of Title 14 CFR Part 27 and Part 29.
  • Must become approved as an ODA Electrical Unit Member and Company DER by the FAA.

Preferred:

  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) (parameter to be displayed and open mechanism to be implemented)

Decision Making, Complexity:

  • Is the delegated authority for the FAA on AHI's site for electrical/avionic decisions. Must exercise independent authority for FAA certification decisions. Will handle complex technical scenarios, able to lead the technical design iteration(s) to resolution, and firmly aim to deliver on time, cost and quality (>90%).

Job Dimensions, Contributions to Success:

  • Will ensure the successful implementation of systems representing more than 100,000 design hours a year and the timely certification of systems for more than 50 STCs a year.
  • Responsible for maintaining FAA relationships required for AHI's ability to obtain certifications.

  • Communicates well with internal and external customers.
  • Engages involved parties to resolve roadblocks and propose mitigating strategies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite: 100% except when on travel.
  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings. Required daily.
  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on production floor including safety warnings or alarms. Required daily.
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications. Required daily.
  • Equipment Operation: able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment. Required daily.
